Many might say who cares, the girls are great and many are very attractive Irish Actresses but after all it's made in Ireland which leads me to say is this 'Ireland's Revenge' on the Tudors? Lot of flack from historians about factuality but then come on, it's entertainment and like all entertaining contemporary film/TV portrayal of history how many get it right and do not commercially exploit to get 'bums on seats'. Can think of one great fictional film that was pretty factual, that was Al Puchino in Revolution, a great film and a must to watch and read about afterwards Washington's war against the Frontier Settllers in the Whiskey Rebellion. Though it was so slagged off in USA that it did not put many 'Bums on Seats', on the other hand there was Mel Gibson's The Patriot a not so factual film that made an hero of a swine of a fella, but did put loads of 'bums on seats'. As for the The Patriot and other Mel Gibson Films, for sure the chattering classes cannot stand old Mel or his movies. It's interesting to see the Guardian so usually hot and bothered by American Imperialism so sticking up for English Imperialism, but before I go on to critical reviews, lets get a pro Gibson/The Patriot review, see link further on, the review by Dan Cameron-Rodhill and also see the link: The Lying Art of Historical Fiction, keeping in mind just how many historical films are really factually truthful as another example The Alamo? not least loads of Westerns that told the story of the War on Native Americans in the conquest of the West, which has changed since films as Cheyenne Autumn and later Dances with Wolves and Geronimo etc.

So what about The Tudors TV series, loads of critical reviews not least regards the slimmed down 'Sex God' version of Henry 8, after years of Fatty Henry 8 and films in nature of 'Carry on' we look at Henry 8 more as a Bernard Manning than Ivan the Terrible. For moment the criticism aside, I must say that it does follow very much as similar to the Penthouse film Galigula:

A young Helen Mirren had a major part in this film as Ceasonia, now this may be 'sexist' but what the hell! I would rather look at Helen Mirren as Ceasonia than her role as the English Queen. Helen has said she regretted acting as Ceasonia in this film but I don't, now if you want to get more info on this film and see more of Helen then do your own Google searches ok! The main point is this, good or bad history films, maybe it's because I am a film buff and history nerd, do motivate me to follow up on both the films details and the related historical facts.

So Ceasonia did exist but she no doubt looked nothing like Helen Mirren in the film Galigula, now I can either say who cares? or get really very nerdy and moan about this not being truthful to history but no I am not going to moan on that point but what of the Tudors? Well my greatest moan here is that Wales and Welsh are hardly mentioned but then should we be? Even though the Spanish Ambassodor Chapyus wrote that Wales was ready for rebellion, there actually was no Welsh Rebellion unlike in England in this period, even the Cornish had a Revolt but not the Welsh, you go and find out why? look into the execution in 1529 of Rhys ap Gruffuydd Rowland Lee and the pacification of Wales prior to the 1536 Act of Union also consider 'Uncle Taffy' Tudor Historians. Start here:

So what of the TV series? well I am enjoying it but
must admit got a tad annoyed about all the
sex in
the first episode of the
present series (did I really
mean that, yes I actually did) but
otherwise am continuing to enjoy. The Interesting thing is this,
for someone who does not
h
ave
much time for Tudor
History, not least the Tudors on the throne of England,
I am
getting more and more curious about the history
of it all.
Yes! to start checking out on
historical accuracy
and portryals
of Characters both male and female,
not too inaccurate
really, they were all scheming so
and so's. Whatever, the
history is quite fascinating at a
personal level. That's the point
really, if historical drama
be it fictionally overloaded can
interest people in history
and send them off to the library to get a
book on the subject
or like me
check things out on the web, then it
cannot be a
bad thing! Of course if this Tudor Series does
that or
not is
another matter, perhaps the men look at it for some
'Tudor
Glam' and the women
for the romance or costumes?
What I
do know is that in association with the Tudors TV series
there
are web sites that give out good background to the series and
real history, see links
below:
