WELSH HISTORY 1500 - 1600 - 1700 - 1800: THREE CENTURIES IN A WELSH HISTORY WILDERNESS?

...
Note Web Links are numbered and will all be included in post at end.
.
Many Welsh Nationalists and myself included for years have been infatuated with Welsh Medieval History and, then for most part it was focused on the period of Llywelyn III of the 13th Century to that of Owain Glyndwr (1: see Owain Glyndwr Communicates) of the 15th Century. I myself for a great many years encouraged this for Welsh Nationalist Political Reasons via my founding of and work via Mudiad Cofiwn (2: see Cofiwn Archive) and then, focusing much around Llywelyn III, 1282 (3: see Rali Cilmeri) and all that again for Welsh Nationalist Political Reasons. No point in denying that and why should I, after all I was for many years first and foremost a Welsh Nationalist and involved in the main with an Alternative Nationalist Movement and Struggle Struggle (4: see AWNM&S Archive).
.
I have attempted however to interest Welsh Nationalists further back than the above to a period starting with the Battle of Mynydd Carn 1081 (5 see I'r Gad) and earlier Princes back to same period of the last 'King of Wales' Gruffydd ap Llywelyn (6 see Urdd Brenhinol Cymru). Such will be further advanced by 'Autonomos' Medieval Gwledydd Initiatives and a new Society 'Cymdeithas Y Tywysogion' (see 7) Also Work of Craig Owen Jones (8) and Stephen Giffiths (9). I am departing myself away from these medieval periods of Welsh History to focus more on 'Welsh Radical/Socialist History 1745 - 1845 focusing on 1848 - 1850' (see 10 Red Remembrancer).
.
This 'Left' project area however, is only recieving my attention up to 2012, as by then I hope to be well on the road to Patriotic/Political Retirement, certainly by 2015/16. After which, I shall indulge myself in some really O.T.T look at and, use of an even earlier period of Welsh History, into the so called 'Dark Ages' aka Early Medieval Period, back to Cunedda (see 11 Cofiwn Archive) and beyond. To coming of Celts (see 12 Celtic Realms) and before them the 'Iberians'. But here i shall focus on a revival of a Druidism (see 13 Paganiad Cymru) as Iolo Morgannwg desired and not what we have inherited and been 'lumbered' with today, a product of post 1850 upwardly mobile Welsh Victorian Capitalist 'Safe Culture' which supported 'British Imperialism' (see 14 Cambrianism). The present day Eisteddfod is not all that different and also owes more to the 16th Century 'Elizabethan Eisteddfod' of Caerwys than Iolo Morgannwg's Primrose Hill 'Radical Gorsedd (see 15 The Welsh Patriot?).
.
All the above aside which is being more and more looked into and developed as various Welsh Nationalist/Republican/Socialist Initiatives and projects, I would like to focus attention of all patriots on the three centuries I label as the 'WILDERNESS YEARS'. Labelled as such for two reasons, as historically speaking Wales and Welsh are seen mainly in the shadow of, or a side show to English/British History and the Expansion of Empire. All of which by the 18th century after The English Civil War and 1688 coming of the Protestant 'William of Orange', we witness Wales and the Welsh coming more centre stage but ironically in trade and culture it becomes centered on London as a 'Welsh Capital'. It is in this period, the Consumer Society is born to feed the growing, what will become the great English Cities of the 19th Century Industrial Revolution. See Welsh Drovers and other growing Welsh Trade links, not only with England but with the Americas, here also focus on the much ignored Maritime History of Wales.
.
There is a general Welsh Nationalist ignorence of this period born out of some stubborn disinterest, in truth Welsh Nationalist History for most Patriots ends unfortunatly with the '1536 Act of Union' and Saunders Lewis's 'Tynged yr Iaith' speech much due to an over indulged interest in a 'Gogcentric/Crachach' Welsh 'Cultural Nationalist' History. Much of our post 1850 history falls prey to a Welsh Victorian Capitalist Version as, today we get after some years of 'Gogcentric' Welsh Religious/Cultural History, it's now become 'Crachachcentric' Welsh History safe and sound to tune of 'Brit' needs! Lets not go on blaming 'Saiscentric' enforced history, you know what I mean blaming the English for no Welsh History being taught in our schools, since 1870's we have been 'Shooting Ourselves in the Foot' on that score! Here are a few examples of our own 'bad BRIT TAFF thnking' on our History.
.
* How we treat heroes, compare Lewis Lewis and Dic Penderyn or Dai Cantwr and Hugh Williams, do I have to go on and why not Princesses Gwenllian, who gets most attention the Child brought up in a Convent or the Warrior Princesses?
.
* Then what about the Tudor Period, why so much focus on 'Yr Iaith' and not the 1529 Revolt of Rhys ap Gruffydd and 'Hanging Judge' Rowland Lee. Then the issue of landownership by English Lords as Liecester and Beaufort families which as implications to the present times, as example it's the Beaufort Crowd - Dukes of Somerset who still own much Welsh Land and profit from it as regards proposed Windmills on Mynydd y Gwair.
.
* Then what of our own times and how and Alternative Welsh Nationalist History of 'Patriotic Resurgent Struggle' is censored, if not being totally 'While Washed' out of history. I have dealt with this matter already in other blogs focusing on the Schools book 'Tyfysg a Phrotest' by Catrin Stevens as a really good/bad example of what I mean.
.
So hopefully you get my drift and essentially what I am saying is, that before the Welsh Nationalist Political Struggle gets anywhere it must free our history from, a teaching based on the 'Secret Agendas', not of the English Establishment but of our own 'Old Brit Taffia Establishment' and not least 'Y Crachach' - England's Client Tribe in Wales. To this end, I in the first instant set out to dramatically and creativelly 'Grab Your Attention' by, perhaps ironically focusing on Welsh Jacobites 1715 - 1745/46/47 with in mind that the Eisteddfod next year is being held in Wrecsam historically a major Welsh Jacobite Centre. Why Jacobites and Jacobite Rebellions, quite simply because between 1715 establisment of the London - Welsh Society of Ancient Britons then and, the Execution of Welsh Jacobite Edward Morgan in 1746, the Wales and Welsh Patriotism are being shaped then. Yes! 'ICH DIEN' and all that.
.
So there you go, most definatly we need a Welsh Jacobite Research Study Group asap, maybe setting up of a 'Welsh Jacobite Society' in Wrecsam ready for Eisteddfod 2011 with objectives short term of 'Welsh Jacobite' themed events and activities in and around Eisteddfod Week. Long term objectives memorialising Welsh Jacobites as Hugh Lloyd and David Morgan. More to follow on this subject on next post to this blog HWB HANES CYMRU.
